This study analyzed factors influencing CO₂ emissions from passenger vehicles, considering the move towards carbon neutrality. Data from Korea Transportation Safety Authority's vehicle inspection stations were used, focusing on gasoline and diesel engines. The results indicated that larger vehicle size, higher displacement (cc), heavier weight (kg), and older age contribute to higher CO₂ emissions in both gasoline and diesel vehicles. To reduce fine particulate matter emissions from diesel vehicles, the government has implemented measures such as enforcing Euro 6 standards, implementing environmental improvement charges, and imposing urban traffic restrictions for vehicles below Korean 5 standards emissions. However, for gasoline vehicles, there is a lack of regulation for old vehicles.We found that a significant number of high-displacement vehicles with older ages being registered. Given the rapid increase in CO₂ emissions from these vehicles, it is crucial to prioritize the transition to eco-friendly vehicles. This can be accomplished by improving policy effectiveness through the implementation of subsidies or the strengthening of regulations.
