The Effect of New Expressways on Local Economy 신설고속도로가 지역경제에 미치는 효과 분석

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of constructing the transportation infrastructure on the local economy using the case of new expressways in South Korea. To analyze, this paper uses local tax per capita, the number of establishments and workers as a proxy for local economy. These various dependent variables make the result of this paper more reliable by expanding the time series and analyzing in detailed level. As a result of the analysis using the difference in differences, the opening of the new expressway increases local tax per capita and the number of manufacturing establishments. In cohort analysis, it shows that the number of manufacturing establishments is more increased in the county with a large distance reduction effect due to the opening of the new expressway. However, the short-term effect of the new expressway seems to be insignificant, given that the size of the coefficient is small and that the coefficient doesn’t show significance in other analysis.

이 논문은 한국의 신설고속도로 개통으로 인한 교통인프라의 개선이 지역경제에 미치는 영향을 시계열을 확장하고 분석단위를 시·군·구 단위로 세분화하여 분석한다. 지역경제 상황을 나타내는 지표로써 1인당 지방세, 산업별 사업체수와 종사자수를 사용한다. 이중차분법을 사용하여 분석한 결과, 신설고속도로 개통은 1인당 지방세와 제조업 사업체수를 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 신설고속도로 개통으로 인한 분석대상(시·군·구)과 교통인프라 사이의 거리감소정도가 클수록 제조업 사업체 증가효과가 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 1인당 지방세와 제조업 사업체수에 대한 효과가 작다는 점, 전체 산업 종사자수 및 제조업 이외 산업의 사업체수에 대해 유의한 효과가 없다는 점을 바탕으로 한국에서의 신설고속도로 개통의 단기효과는 미미한 것으로 보인다.
